Put on your most comfortable sneakers, because you’re going to discover an ancient city with us. We’re going to take a route that will make you feel like a local, a Cordoban.
We’re going to start off in style, with a grand opening, as if you were an emperor arriving at his new conquest. We begin with the Calahorra Tower. This tower, in addition to historical monuments for the defence of the city, houses the Al-Andalus Museum, which tells how Muslim, Christian, and Jewish cultures coexisted here for centuries.
And if you don’t have time to see it, at least take advantage and climb to its viewing platform, enjoy the incredible views of the city of Córdoba, and survey—a fine verb for a conquistador like you—everything you’re about to visit below. The climb costs €4.50, and if that seems like a lot, wait until you cross the bridge and you’ll see.
What you’re crossing is also history: the Roman Bridge and its 16 arches are part of Córdoba’s rich history. As you cross the bridge, you’ll find one of the three gates to the ancient city that still stands: Puerta del Puente (Bridge Gate). From the top of the bridge, for just one euro, you’ll have fantastic views.
Once you’ve passed that, get ready to see one of Córdoba’s great wonders and symbols: its Mosque-Cathedral. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s an emblem of the city and the cultures that once lived and coexisted here.
To see the interior, you must get tickets, either online, at the box office, or from the machines next to the ticket office. Either way, we recommend getting up early to enjoy it as much as possible and avoid lines. Also, don’t be lazy; you’ll only be here for one day, and you have to make the most of it.
Whenever possible, enter the Mosque with a guide, and remember that during Mass, admission is free. It’s true that you can move around freely, but admission entitles you to take photos, videos, and a guide. It’s all advantages. And since we talked about beautiful views of the city, take advantage and climb the Bell Tower for some unforgettable photos.
Right here, you’ll find one of the city’s most famous streets, Calleja del Pañuelo, the narrowest in all of Córdoba. Being so close to the Mosque, you can’t miss it. It’s also on the way to our next stop, the Alcázar of Córdoba.
The Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs is another architectural and historical gem of both Córdoba and Spain. Its Keep is said to be the site of the first conversations between Queen Isabella the Catholic and Columbus about his voyage to the Indies. Spoiler alert: he didn’t get his bearings very well, but what he found wasn’t too bad either.
Don’t hesitate when buying your ticket for one of the most beautiful places in Córdoba, which is saying something. Enjoy its gardens, fountains, and its extensive history that spans from the Romans to the present day. If you want to find the main gate and see the three great gates of the ancient city, you’ll find the Puerta de Sevilla very close by. As you can see, you’ve already reached two of three, and you should know that the main gate is just around the corner.
We head north to end the day, climbing the streets of Córdoba past the Almodóvar Gate, looking for the Viana Palace, also known as the Palace of the Counts of Viana.
The most recognizable feature of the palace, besides the building itself, which dates back to the 15th century, are its twelve Andalusian-style courtyards. They’re truly stunning, of great beauty. And remember, whenever you can get there early, booking a room or booking a ticket is even better.
